17世紀後半のマジック・ランタン(幻灯)の同時代の科学との関わりを論じたもの.具体的にはキルヒャーとフランスのデカルト主義原子論者ヴァルモン(Vallemont)におけるマジック・ランタンの使用法を比較します.著者はまず,当時のillusioという語が古代以来のレトリック的な意味(言外の意味を暗示させること)とキリスト教的な意味(悪魔の幻惑)を持っていて,マジック・ランタンの機能がその両方をカヴァするものであったことを明らかにします.キルヒャーの場合,光源=太陽(神),鏡(天使),レンズ(人間),映像(世界)というアナロジーが成り立ち(これがキルヒャーのマジック・ランタン図の「誤り」の原因である,と著者は言う),見かけの混乱の中に隠れた秩序があることを暗示している,すなわち「不可視(隠れた秩序)」を「可視(マジック・ランタンという装置)」にしている,と言います.また,ヴァルモンの場合,原子論的デカルト主義(ガサンディとデカルトの折衷)における光の性質を説明するために,マジック・ランタンを使い,光の粒子という「不可視物」を「可視」の実験で示している(これを著者は「アナロジー的証明」と呼ぶ),と言います.
